In 1969, a severe drought hit Tamil Nadu, particularly Acharapakkam. Fr. A. Pushpam organized a car procession to seek rain through the Blessed Mother’s intercession. At Nallayan Kundru, rain miraculously poured down after the procession, leading to the naming of the Blessed Mother as “Mazhai Malai Madha” (Mother of the Rainy Mountain). A grotto was built in her honor. Rev. Fr. Pushpam and Rev. Fr. Backiya Regis dedicatedly served the shrine. The annual October feast draws thousands of devotees, regardless of faith, and the shrine aids the marginalized. In 2003, Mazhai Malai Madha was recognized as the Second Patroness of the Diocese of Chingleput, elevated to a Diocesan shrine in the presence of Rt. Rev. Dr. Neethinathan and Cardinal Simon Lourdusamy.
